The reality of third year has begun, but my final year nerves have disappeared after spending the most amazing two week at Style Birmingham magazine.
As part of my University course I am required to do a placement at a fashion magazine, I chose Style because it is Birmingham's biggest fashion and lifestyle magazine and I really related to their content.
Surprisingly, the team is really small, three people to be precise, the rest of the team are interns and contributors. I really benefitted from this! The placement was really hands on and the editor, Elle, always had exciting work planned for me to do. I wrote a lot of small articles for the Winter 2015 edition of the magazine and designed a few page layouts.
A large amount of my time at style was spent researching upcoming trend and fashions and getting in touch with PR's and people who we could feature in the magazine. I learnt a lot about the magazines background such as their audience and aims, and I learnt their house style for design.
A huge highlight of the placement was working on the main photo shoot for the Winter 2015 issue. I worked with hair stylists, a makeup artist, a stylist, a model and the rest of the Style Bham team to produce a successful photo spread and cover shoot. It was amazing and really gave me a confident feel for the industry! I also managed to meet upcoming designer Ashley Williams. This was for an event called Live + Loud which exhibited creative work and Ashley was the main appearance, she was lovely!
Another, and perhaps the biggest, highlight of the placement was meeting and assisting an interview with Jada, an upcoming Birmingham based designer. She was so passionate and gave some great advice in the interview for fashionista that aren't based in London. Her recent collection is also beautiful and I am in love was the pale blue faux fur shawl from the collection that she brought into the studio!
My final highlight happened yesterday, the Style Bham team were invited to the official opening of Leon in Birmingham's new Grand Central station. Leon is a takeaway restaurant which specialises in healthy food. The opening was particularly important because it is the first store outside of London and Birmingham has a particular soft spot in Marion (Leon's wife) heart; it's where she went to University in the 1950s! The food was spectacular and I took a goodie bag full of food home that might last me all week. We need a Leon in the North East!
